Mira Loma High School Arcade Creek Project
The Arcade Creek Project began as a result of the International Baccalaureate Program coming to Mira Loma High School. In this highly accelerated program, students are required to take IB Biology, IB Physics or IB Environmental Science. Furthermore, they are required to complete a school-wide, coordinated field project within the local community that integrates the different science courses taught at the school. The students and their instructors therefore began studying nearby Arcade Creek, a beautiful neighborhood waterway that runs year-round just north of Mira Loma.
The County of Sacramento
The Sacramento County Stormwater Quality Program works to clean urban stormwater runoff and to protect Sacramento local creeks and rivers. It is a partner in the larger Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership (SSQP) that covers the Sacramento County area - including the Cities of Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Folsom, Galt, and Rancho Cordova. Together, the SSQP educates and informs the public about stormwater pollution; encourages public participation; works with industries, businesses, and new developments to encourage pollution prevention.
California Water Resources Control Board
One of the many goals of the California Water Resources Control Board is to protect the health of local watersheds while increasing public involvement in and public education of the watershed preservation and restoration process. The California Water Resources Control Board's Watershed Management Initiative was created specifically to identify and prioritize water resource problems within individual watersheds, involve stakeholders to create solutions, coordinate regulatory efforts, and coordinate programs relating to the funding of local watershed groups.
Sacramento Urban Creeks Council
The Sacramento chapter of the Urban Creeks Council was formed in 1988 to support the growing creek preservation efforts of its parent organization, the Urban Creeks Council of California. The mission of the Urban Creeks Council Sacramento chapter is to promote the preservation and care of natural streams through public education, advocacy and hands-on activity.
The Urban Creeks Council organizes community-wide creek clean-up efforts, distributes educational materials related to local waterways, supports on-going volunteer efforts, hosts educational and community workshops on creek-related issues and participates in the land use planning process to promote creek preservation.
Sacramento Weed Warriors
Sacramento Weed Warriors is a community stewardship initiative of the California Native Plant Society, Sacramento Valley Chapter. Sacramento Weed Warriors' mission is to promote healthy ecosystems in parks and open space, enhance the community's understanding of and appreciation for the unique values of Sacramento's natural resources, and to foster broad-based participation in environmental stewardship. Many local organizations such as the American River Parkway Foundation and the Urban Creeks Council provide the Sacramento Weed Warriors with support.
